Why do I get "Failed to initialize video device" when using the Windows client app?

The "Failed to initialize video device" error message is usually related to the DirectX driver or display driver, and only happens on the Windows client app.  Please try the following suggestions when this message displays.

1.  Verify that DirectX has been installed properly and that Direct3D is enabled, or you could just re-install it to make sure.  This is especially good advice when the Direct3D is not available or disabled.

On your computer, click Windows Start Menu --> Search -> enter dxdiag.exe to open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.  Click the Display tab shown below, and check to see if Direct3D is enabled.

2.  Update your display driver and restart the computer.  This is also a possible solution especially for those display cards with acceleration features.

    @Ilesher,

    Please also update the display driver then try again. If it still does not work, we also replied to your ticket to collect more info.

    Thanks,

    For those with multi-monitor setups on the client side. I found I got this error when I launched the connection from my secondary monitor. Initiating the connection from the primary display works without a problem.

    I can 100% reproduce the issue by dragging Splashtop Personal client to the secondary display and then clicking Connect on a remote server.

    Hope this helps someone!

    I'm having this issue as well. It worked well from the same laptop last week, but now I'm getting the Failed to initialize video device error. I've done the Windows update and have updated the device drivers. Still the same error.

    I'm still having the issue, regardless of which monitor I launch from, and support recommended that I roll back to a previous windows update. I can't do that since I'm working with a development environment and I have to stay up with the matching release environments.

    I am having the same problem. On the first day after my install of Splashtop, I connected successfully from Splashtop Personal to two different computers that were running Splashtop Streamer. But the next day, and all days afterward, I consistently receive "Failed to initialize video device" message.

    All of the computers are running Windows 10 Home (current version). DirectX is running okay on all the computers involved.

    None of the above suggestions have helped.

    I've just started having the same problem.  DirectX working fine; drivers all updated.  Deathly silence from Splashtop in response to the comments above.  Is there any solution or do I just junk Splashtop and try something else???

    @dnmeale,

    Do you have also Duet Display or any third party video driver installed on the computer? Such third party video driver might occupy dirext X resource so our app can't use the resource to play the video.Uninstalling the third party video driver will resolve the issue.

    If it still does not work, please let us know.

    In my case, this was the solution. After removing Duet Display I was able to connect to my Mac from the PC downstairs. Thanks!!

    However......now I miss my iPad display next to my laptop ;-(

    @Twan,

    We also have Wired XDisplay app for iPad you could use to extend your laptop's display using iPad. Please search it on the appstore to give it a try.
