Why is there no sound on my Mac? Or why do I hear noise coming from my Mac's microphone?

Please make sure Soundflower is installed on your Mac.  This may be the main reason why sound is not working properly.

  1. Normally, the Soundflower driver is installed with the Mac Streamer installation.  Verify that Soundflower is correctly installed.

Open System Preferences and select Sound as indicated in the red box below.

The "Input" and "Output" of the Sound settings should contain Soundflower (2ch) as shown below:

  2. Please make sure Input volume and Output volume are at maximum.  This may help if you still can't get sound.  (Some users told us that this was the reason why they were not getting sound on their tablet/phone.)

  3. For the versions of Splashtop Streamer for Mac before v2.2.0.1, please verify that the "Enable sound redirection" checkbox is enabled in the Settings tab of the Splashtop Streamer box as shown below.

For the versions of Splashtop Streamer for Mac since v2.2.0.1 or v2.2.0.2, please verify that the "Mute this computer" checkbox is enabled in the Settings tab of the Splashtop Streamer box as shown below.

For the versions of Splashtop Streamer for Mac since v2.3.0.4+,  please verify that the "Output sound only to mobile device" button is selected in the Settings tab of the Splashtop Streamer box as shown below.

After you have completed the steps above, you should be able to hear the desired audio on your tablet/phone instead of your Mac's microphone noises.

4.  Sometimes the Soundflower audio driver which Splashtop uses may develop unknown problems and cause sound issues on the Client side (no sound or very low volume).  Please try the following steps to see if there is any improvement.

a.  Uninstall the Mac Streamer.

b.  Uninstall Soundflower.

c.  Restart the computer.

d.  Re-install the Mac Streamer.  This will also install Soundflower again automatically.  It's better to restart the computer again.

Please see sections "A" and "B" below, for more detailed steps.

note.gif  NOTES:

  • If you want sound to be played on both your Mac and your tablet or phone, make sure the Enable sound redirection / Mute this computer (v2.2.0.1+) checkbox is enabled (checked) as shown above.
  • Then in the options available on the "Soundflower Settings menu," make sure the Soundflower (2ch) property is set to Built-in Output (refer to Step 3), or select Built-in device in Step 2 Input/Output.
  • If you un-check the Enable sound redirection / Mute this computer (v2.2.0.1+)  option (refer to Step 4), and have not properly installed Soundflower (with "Internal microphone" selected in Sound/Input tab during the Splashtop session), then you may still hear the Mac's microphone noises on your tablet/phone.
  • In Mac Streamer v2.3.0.4 and later versions, there are two additional Sound options provided, as indicated in the illustration above.  You can choose to stream sound to the mobile device only, or to keep sound on the computer side only.

A).  How do I completely un-install the Mac Streamer?

1.  Click "Go" on the Tray menu (upper left) and select Downloads to open the Download folder.
2.  Double-click on the "Splashtop_Streamer_Mac_vx.x.x.x.dmg" file.  (The file name will vary depending on the version downloaded.)
3.  Double-click "Uninstall Splashtop Streamer."
4.  If a warning message appears, click "Open" in the message box.
5.  Input the user password to continue the Running if system requests it.
6.  Restart your Mac.
7.  Confirm that the Streamer is removed completely (the Splashtop Streamer icon no longer exists in the LaunchPad).

B).  How do I un-install Soundflower?

1.  Click "Go" on the Tray menu (upper left).

2.  Click the  "Go to Folders" item.
3.  Type "/System/Library/Extensions"
4.  Find the file "Soundflower.kext"
5.  Remove that file, and then re-start the Mac system.
6.  Open System Preferences -> Sound -> Output.
You should not see SoundFlower any more in the Output tab.

    I found what I was looking for and thought I would post it here for others. I am not using Skype but the answers were contained within;

    My setup:
    DP 7.1

    You Need:

    1) Install Skype & Sowndflower.

    2) In System Pref, set both System and Default Outs to 8Pre.

    3) Create Aggregate Device (SEE BELOW)  consisting of 8Pre and Soundflower 2ch(In this instance, I'll use 2ch version)

    4) Launch Sowndflowerbed, I'm using the 2ch version in this example,so the 16ch version should be set to 'OFF'

    5) Set 2ch SF to 'MOTU 8pre', then set both Channel 1&2 to 'NONE'

    6) Keep SF launched, Launch DP, and choose Aggregate Device in Hardware Setup.

    7) Let's make a very simple project; let's say you have one mono audio track of a narration which you have to replace a few lines here and there, while someone listen in to the session through Skype.

    8) So, Create following tracks;
--one mono audio track, and import some mono audio
    --a master fader track

9)Plug in a mic to an input on 8PRE, and choose that input on the mono track.

10)create a bus on the mono track.

11)set the bus destination to 'Sowndflower Output Stream1 5-6' (it's 5-6 because 8Pre only has main out 1&2 and headphone 1&2, 4 in total)

    12) Launch Skype, go to Audio Pref, and set it to;
    Output: 8PRE
    Input: Soundflower(2ch)

    13) Make Skype test call

    14) Play back the mono audio track and check if it's recorded by Skype test call OK.

    15) Make another test call, this time record something to the audio track with the mic, do the test call while you're recording.

    16) check if it's recorded by Skype OK.

    Voila--- :-)

Alternatively, you can 'collect' all audio you want to be sending to Skype via normal bus to one aux track before sending it to Skype, by assigning that aux track's output to 'Sowndflower Output Stream1 5-6'.

I also use cuemix to decide what the narrator hears in his cans, etc..

    What do you mean by:

    3) Create Aggregate Device consisting of 8Pre and Soundflower 2ch(In this instance, I'll use 2ch version)"

In Apple's Audio/MIDI Setup you can combine several audio interfaces/devices into one multi-faceted device. This accomplishes at least two major things; 1) it eliminates clocking issues between multiple devices, and 2) enables the use of many input/output devices in software that is only programmed to handle one device at a time. This was one of the wonders of OSX, and something the audio people at Apple rightfully were proud of.

Somewhere along the line, something changed in Audio/MIDI Setup. There used to be a menu item for "Create Aggregate Device." Now it's the little + sign under the list of audio devices.

I've almost always had very low level sound when controlling my Mac Mini from my iPad. This is true for a current generation Mac Mini Intell Quad core CPU w/8GB RAM, running Mavericks (latest update) with SplashTop Streamer 2.554 and an iPad Mini running iOS 7.1 and Splashtop Desktop The iPad Mini has 32 GB RAM.

Video performance is excellent, but audio is very very low when connecting to the iPad Mini. I've also had similar experience with the client running on an iPad2. Audio is consistently low, even after doing a complete Splashtop Streamer and Soundflower uninstall and reinstall, per your instructions. No improvement. Wireless network is Apple Airport Extreme, Simultaneous Dual Band using 802.1N protocol.

SOUND RESTORED !!!!!   on ipad ios7 with mac os 10.7

    I lost sound after a recent upgrade. With the instructions above i was able to restore a very faint volume but this was frustratingly soft.  However full sound has now been restored by doing the following;

    1. Fully delete the soundflower downloaded with Splashtop (as above).

    2. Download the latest version of Soundflower from the maker's website that puts a Soundflower folder in Applications.

    3. Open the Soundflower folder in Applications and open the Soundflowerbed icon which puts a flower icon on top of your main screen. Open this icon and select Audio Setup.  Set all volume levels to the highest settings.

A simple solution that I hope works for you too.

Thanks for the suggestion. I finally had time to try this fix. I uninstalled Soundflower, downloaded the latest I could find (MacUpdate had v1.6.6) and reinstalled Soundflower. I opened Soundflowerbed and turned all the levels up to maximum and I can hear audio on my iPad Mini, but it's still low, even with the iPad volume at maximum. I guess Splashtop is a decent product without much audio, but I must admit, I am pretty disappointed that it's basically a virtually audio less product. I'm looking for a replacement. Sad, but support has never had a solution that has worked. I'm pretty much using state-of-the-art Apple equipment and software and this is about the only thing that doesn't work. I'm heading to the App Store to find a replacement, if I can.

Im using Soundflower v1.6.6b.  You can download it by going to the macupdate Soundflower download page and click the link to 'Visit Developer's Site' on the top right menu bar. This actually links to 'code.google.com'. The download link for v1.6.6b is mid-way on the left sidebar.

Make sure you properly uninstall the existing version of soundflower and instal v1.6.6b. Click on the black flower icon in the top right icon bar and select 'None OFF' for both 2ch and 64ch. Select Audio Setup and ensure all volumes are maxed.  Ensure your system prefs are set to your preferences and output volume is max.  Volumes can be adjusted later to suit.

Like you I was very disappointed with Splashtop but now audio works for me its indispensable.  Good luck!

Pjstew: I did all of that and I just verified that all the levels are maxed. Even with all that, the audio level on my iPad is minimal. All other sound is fine, just not Splashtop. The app has always worked very well, but has not had decent audio since my earliest use of it. Back then, it was fine and it just seemed to go away. That was on two different iPads, two different Macs, three different iPhones. I would say that perhaps I am expecting too much, but a year or so ago, it seemed to have decent audio.

I am using streamer v2.6.5.6 on mac osx.
Is it possible to have audio on both the streamer and the client? i.e. redirection but not audio on either device only.

For all, the following worked for me:

    1. Uninstall streamer by using the script in streamer dmg

    2. Uninstall soundflower by using the script in soundflower dmg

    3. reboot OSX

    4. Install streamer v3.x

    5. REBOOT again

    6. Now you shall get the sound on iPhone/iPad, but volume may be extremely low. And the solution is to open the "Audio MIDI setup" app comes with OSX, find the soudflower(2ch) and change all volumes there to MAX.

I'm trying to get sound from Apple's Logic Studio, but it only works if I'm using 44.1kHz sample rate.  But I usually work in 48kHz.  SoundFlower does support 48k so i'm thinking it must be something from the Splashtop side.  Is there anything that can be done about this?  Regards.
