Does Splashtop support Bluetooth keyboards?

Yes, Splashtop supports Bluetooth (BT) keyboard devices.  We internally tested a few brands of BT keyboards, and below we have listed them along with notes about known issues, for your reference.

iOS:

  • Apple and Logitech (Logitech Tablet Keyboard IPD) :  There are no known issues with these BT keyboards.  In addition, so far, there are no user-reported issues for BT keyboards on iOS.

To launch the Virtual keyboard during a Splashtop session:

To use a BT keyboard in the Splashtop app:

  1. In iPad's Settings, make sure you've paired with the BT keyboard device successfully.
  2. Launch the Splashtop app and open a text editor, such as Notepad, on the Windows desktop, and set the focus on that text editor window.
  3. Before typing text (into Notepad for example), you need to tap the '^' or 'keyboard' (for iPad app v2.2.0.6+) icon located in the lower right corner first.  Then you can successfully type text in Notepad.

caution-icon.gif   Limitations on using a BT keyboard (for iPad) with the Splashtop app:

  • For gaming:  Users usually need to send key events like down+down+up, but iOS only allows a BT keyboard to send down+up.  That will seriously impact gaming controls.  These limitations using a BT keyboard on the iPad to play games mainly come from iOS.  Currently, we still cannot solve this kind of issue.  Our engineering is seeking other, better ways for gaming purposes.
  • For general Windows controls:  Combination keys starting with various Ctrl/Alt keys would not work on the Splashtop app.  That's why we created some combination keys on our virtual keyboard.
  • If you use a BT keyboard in a word processor like MS Word, the following key combinations are supported.

1. cmd+c (cmd=Ctrl if used in Windows)

2. cmd+v

3. cmd+x

4. cmd+a

5. arrow_keys

6. cmd+arrow_keys

7. option+arrow_keys

8. shift+arrow_keys

9. shift+cmd+arrow_keys

10. shift+option+arrow_keys

Actually, there are some limitations from Apple which limit or prevent app developers from supporting more complicated combination keys.  However, please be assured that we are always seeking better solutions for this situation.

  •  Incidentally, the BT mouse is not supported on all iDevices like iPad, according to Apple's official announcement.

Android:

  • Tested BT keyboards:

    1.  Logitech (Model Name:  Y-X5A77)

    2.  Microsoft MS 6000

     Dock:

    1.  Asus TF101

    2.  Asus Prime

    3.  Asus TF300

caution-icon.gif   Known issue:  AZERTY will be recognized as QWERTY in multilingual input methods.

To launch the virtual keyboard in Splashtop:

There is a special '^' button located in the lower right corner by default, and there are two special gestures for this button.

  • Double Tap on  ^  :  Will launch the Splashtop virtual keyboard (illustrated below).
  • Tap-and-hold (long press) on  ^  :  Long-tap and dragging the '^' button can reposition this icon.

android_gesture4.jpg.

How to use it in the Splashtop app:

  1. In the Android tablet's Settings, make sure you have paired the BT keyboard device successfully.
  2. Launch the Splashtop app and open a text editor, such as Notepad, on the Windows desktop, and set focus on that editing window.

Unlike iOS, you do not need to tap '^' and enable the BT keyboard.

  3. If you want to access the Function keys which are not supported on the BT keyboard (i.e. F1~F12), you can tap the  '^'  icon on the tablet to show a virtual keyboard of Function keys.

Now, here is my question. Considering that the iPad is also useful for gaming, will a Bluetooth keyboard work well on gaming in Splashtop without issues? For example, if two buttons are pressed at the same time (diagonal movement), will that register in Splashtop?

    @aero-dude,

Single key on BT keyboard should work fine on Splashtop app, but combination keys starting with kind of Ctrl/Alt keys don't work on Splashtop app. That's why we made some combinations keys on our virtual keyboard.

The limitations using BT keyboard on ipad to play games come from iOS, we currently still can't solve this kind of issues.

Anyway, our engineering is still working on solutions for gaming with Splashtop app.

And does a Galaxy Note 10.1 stylus act as a stylus on Windows 7 64 bit connection? Pressure sensitive and all?

    @Mark,

Splashtop app doesn't  support any stylus on graphical program like Photoshop at this moment. Anyway, we will pass your request to the product team.

Just so you know, other virtual desktop apps (Jump, Remoter, etc) DO support combination keys like cmd-tab, etc. So don't blame Apple for not allowing those.

Does Splashtop work with any of the BT game controllers that are available for iOS devices?

When will combination keys on an iPad w/ BT keyboard be supported again? They were working great in iOS 6x and broke as soon as I upgraded to iOS 7.

I have the same issue as John. The keys were working great (Windows key, etc) in iOS6 but are now broken again in iOS7. Sadface.

I have a Huawei MediaPad 10.1 with a Keyboard dock and thi works fine. I have a issue with the Bluetooth mouse. I am using a logitech vluetooth travelmouse. which work fine on the tablet, with or withou the keyboard. it just spins wildly on splashpad.

Update to above statement, it seems like the games will over compensate the controls. and if you and really slow and delicate it will operate but its hard to control.

Following up on the issue of combination keys with bluetooth keyboards on iOS7. What's the ETA on supporting this again? Remember, you had it working great in iOS6! There are VNC apps that fully support passthrough of key combinations on iOS7; PocketCloud, for example. I don't want to abandon Splashtop for other reasons (audio, etc), but it's getting annoying!

Right now, the command key cannot be sent from the iOS client to a OS X host at all (whether inputted through a physical keyboard or an on-screen keyboard). This issues need to be resolved urgently

Apparently, there is an official way to capture keyboard inputs in iOS now: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1267560/receive-iphone-keyboard-events

splashtop doesn't work well with logitec BT keyboard ultrathin in gaming, as for ex. arrow keys are registered only as single stroke when hold, and wsad keys will be registered as repeated than continually hold, which makes it impossible to walk, when jumping is initialized in the game with two strokes w-w . keyboard settings in windows won't help.

I have the same problem as Chris.Outwrigt: the arrow keys are only single stroke. I have also noticed that the keyboard lag time is exceptionally slow or even non-existent, which makes typing a document almost impossible.

    Hello there,
Splashtop app on your Android phone and runs Windows 7 64-bit desktop application installed on my computer, but I have a desktop computer can be remotely shut down although unfortunately 'that could not be woken up remotely. My motherboard ASUS M5A99X R2,0 EVO motherboard's BIOS settings in the "Wake on LAN" I did not see.
    Best regards,

    @Ali,

You need to have related settings configured properly to use Wake On LAN feature. You could also refer to https://support-splashtoppersonal.splashtop.com/entries/21750073 for more details.
