How do I use "Local Mode" in Splashtop Personal / Splashtop 2 (for iPad) ?

Reminder:  "Splashtop 2" is now known as "Splashtop Personal."

By popular demand, starting with Splashtop Personal/Splashtop v2.1.x, we've brought back a highly-requested feature known as "Local Mode."  Local Mode is used for automatically finding the computers (that have Streamers installed) within the same network.  Now, when using Splashtop Personal/Splashtop v2.1x (just as with the older Splashtop v1.x versions), you will be able to use this feature directly in a closed network, and you will not be required to log in with a Splashtop Account.  Please follow the instructions below to enable and use it.

note.gif   NOTE:  Local Mode is for iPad only, because all iPad users have been converted to Splashtop Personal (Splashtop 2) and no longer have access to such functionality that was in Splashtop 1.

1.  In the Streamer, you can only create a security code in the Security tab (shown below) or the Others tab and leave all other settings as default or empty.  (Example illustration below is using Windows Streamer v2.2.5.1.)

2.  On the iPad, log out of your Splashtop Account on the iPad (if currently logged in).

3.  Click the "I want to use Splashtop 2 in a closed network" link at the bottom (indicated in the illustration below) to enter Local Mode.

4.  After entering Local Mode, you will see all available computers within that network listed.  Click the "Edit" button (at the right side, as indicated in the illustration below) to change the resolution option used by iPad.

5.  If you don't see any computers listed automatically, but you know there should be, you can also add them manually as follows:

a)  Click the  icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

b)  Select Add Computer, as indicated below.

image3.png

c)  Manually type the data for the following three items:

    • In the IP Address field, type the computer's IP address.  (If you don't know what it is, you can get it from the "Advanced" tab in the Streamer dialog box.)
    • The behavior of the Security Code field is the same as it was in Splashtop v1.  This is the code defined in the "Security" tab(for Streamer v2.2.5.1 or above) or "Others" tab(for Streamer v2.2.0.2 or less) of the Streamer dialog box.  If you leave it empty here, you will be asked to input the Security Code every time you attempt to connect.  You can also input the security code here to get a direct connection, without being asked for a security code when you want a connection.
    • The Port field already contains a default number, and we recommend that you do not change it.  However, if you need to use a port number different from the default value, you do have the option to enter it manually here.    NOTE:  Remember, the two subsequent port numbers will also be used.  For example, if you enter 6800 in the Port field, then ports 6801 and 6802 would also be used.
      image1.png

d)  Click the Add button.

6.  Repeat Step 5c above for each computer to which you may want to connect (IP Address, Security Code, and Port).

note.gif   NOTE:  After an IP address has been added, you cannot edit it again.  You would need to delete it and then add a new one if necessary.   To delete an added computer, just hit the icon in right end side;  then click the Delete button to remove it.

7.  Whenever you want to go back to "Splashtop account mode," please click the Exit button.

    @Benclark1113,

    On latest win streamer v2.2.5.1, "Security code" has been moved to Security tab, no more Others tab.

    At school district, only Splashtop 2 for ipad can connect in local mode when ipad and streamers are in the same subnet.

    The new streamer does not allow me to not login to SplashTop I like to make sure I only can access my computer locally.  How do I configure the streamer to not connect to the internet or accept access from the internet like previous version of the streamer?

    Splashtop 2 does not work on a local network with a Mac and an iPad. That is an absolute fact. I have a manually set up wifi connection using my Mac I have spent hours trying and the best I can get is a 5min connection and then it bombs out losing the connection. I use my iPad as a remote for running presentations and this is totally unacceptable. I have been embarrassed to lose my connection mid speech after 5minutes. Come on guys! It works flawlessly over an Internet connection but not over wifi! I am a travelling agent and don't always have access to Internet. This was such a disappointment. Your developers need to spend time getting the local network option to actually work with a MacBook and an iPad.

    @Rcw,

    Here are two possible reasons to get disconnection frequently, please have a check on your router.

    1. If your WiFi is using 5 Ghz instead of 2.4 Ghz, it might be more susceptible to losing the connection, due to the limitation of the shorter transmitting distance.  Please try 2.4 Ghz to see if there is any improvement.
    2. If your router supports the QoS or similar option (Quality on Service, an option to limit bandwidth usage for each connection thread), please try to turn OFF the QoS option to see if there is any improvement.

    There is no router....... I am using a direct wifi connection between an iPad and a MacBook air. It works for 5min and then splashtop drops the connection.

    @Rcw,

    So, you are using ad-hoc network. Could you check the instructions on this link ,and change Security between None or WEP to see if there's any difference. This is the link provides more details.

    https://support-splashtop2.splashtop.com/entries/22171173-connect-to-your-computer-via-ad-hoc-network-with-splashtop-2

    Please move your ipad as close to your mac as you can, distance for ad-hoc network should be an issue and can't be too far.

    I have followed the instructions and it simply doesn't work. This app DOES NOT WORK on a macbook air with an ipad unless connected to the net. It  drops the connection using the an ad-hoc or local network. I dont see what WEP / No security has to do with it. And that makes no difference anyway  I also recently purchased splashtop presenter, only to discover that this too, DOES NOT work through an ad-hoc network. It works fine through the internet, but cannot see my macbook air at all on an ADHOC. I have set it to a static IP address, but the splashtop presenter cannot see or connect to my mac until I switch the internet on. I dont have access to the internet in many of the auditoriums I present in and this is a bitter disappointment. It appears your company is selling products that dont work and features that aren't actually available. I sincerely hope you can come up with a solution to this problem for both splashtop presenter and splashtop 2.

    I have now also purchased splashtop whiteboard in the hope that this might work through Wi-Fi adhoc!!! I have spent a lot of money on this product and I am really hoping that either someone at your support desk or someone who knows what is going on there can get this to work!

    RCW: I finally got it to work - sporadically - by assigning an IP address to the mac. You can't just create a closed network with the "create network" command. You must assign an IP address manually.

    It's painful to use SpalshTop2 with an ad-hoc connection. But SplashTop 1 is flawless and very easy to use with ad-hoc on a mac. Not sure what changed, but I feel lucky that I still have one older iPad which I haven't upgraded to SplashTop2 yet. If anything happens to that iPad, I'll be hosed. Wish they would release the old version again!!

    I am amazed that people are still buying this product. It is enormously defective. I have spent hours with support proving to them that I can PING my ipad from my mac without any problem and that I have a full manual connection. I have even sent them screenshots of all of this (iPad and Mac) and they refuse to acknowledge that without an internet connection their product does not work. The product needs fixing urgently. It is not cheap to buy and is marketed as a premium app. It is such an enormous pity. THIS NEEDS URGENT ATTENTION.

    @Mikelaptop ,

    Basically, if your iphone and computer have logged in with a same Splashtop account, you should be able to use Splashtop 2 in the local network. If you still see the 'satellite' icon in the local network, probably there's firewall blocked them, please check this link for more info/suggestions about firewall settings adjustment.

    @Djames,

    Local mode is only for Splashtop 2 for iPad users because there's no Splashtop v1 app for ipad any more.

    The other apps can use local mode with v1 apps.

    @Jaff.Kuo,

    I would like to use Splastop2 on a Galaxy tablet and to control a laptop running Win7 WITHOUT internet as I live on a boat and very often loose internet.

    Is it possible?

    If so, are there instructions solely for Android?

    Many thanks

    @Spiv13,

    Local mode in Splashtop 2 is only for ipad.

    For android tablet and other clients, you can choose Splashtop Remote Desktop HD(v1), and then using ad-hoc network or setup a router on your boat for local connection.

    @Spiv13,

    For android devices, you can directly find Splashtop Remote Desktop(HD) on google Play. android phone and tablet are different apps.

    For win client v1, this is the download link: http://remotedl.splashtop.com/download/winclient/Splashtop_Remote_Desktop_Win_v1.1.6.1.exe

    @Jaff.Kuo,

    a couple of more questions please:

    1)  on my Win7 PC  I already already have Splashtop 2 and Streamer 2.3.0.2  (since I had an iPhone earlier).  Do I need to uninstall them and clear registry settings?

    2)  I now own a Galaxy Phone and a Galaxy tablet, do I have to purchase two  Splashtop Remote Desktop(HD)

    @Spiv13,

    Splashtop for win client v1&v2 and streamer can co-exist and work fine.

    Sorry, they are separated apps on Google Play. HD is for tablets, non-HD is for phones.

    Hi I have a windows PC an iPad 2 and we have an android tablet. The PC I want to connect to is connected to other local PCs (both Linux and windows via SMB) My iPAD and android devices are connected to the Internet and these PCs via a wireless router. I am concerned about using remote access because I do not run a DMZ on my home network and I really only need local mode. My son wants to use his ASUS transformer Android tablet (which has a keyboard, mouse and trackpad) for playing Mine craft on the PC Can I check my understanding if what I need to get this working 1. I believe I need both the version 1 and version 2 client software running concurrently on my PC 2. I believe I need Splashtop 2 which is free on my IPad 3. I believe that I need Splashtop Remote Desktop version 1 ( not version 2) on the android tablet which I need to purchase For playing Minecraft on the android device will the non HD version be OK or would he be better off with the HD version of Splastop 1? Am I correct that one I have this setup I do not need my network connected to the Internet to use Splashtop?

    I have been hours trying to connect an IPad 2 with a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard with Splashtop 2. It has been impossible. It used to work perfectly with Splashtop 1. I guess we would have to look for another option. Meaning app. :(

    I just updated my iPad to iOS7.  Now when I select a computer to display in Local mode, I get a 'new' pop-up screen asking for my security code.  I'm prepared to enter the security code, but the keyboard does not pop-up.  I have tried 'swiping' the screen in all directions, tapping the "Enter Security Code" screen repeatedly, and any other suggestions from my collegues ... to no avail.  How can I get the keyboard to appear so I can enter the security code??

    The mac Splashtop REmote v1 just crashes now after latest mac upgrade.  Can you please put local mode back in the Splashtop Personal for PC and Mac? I'm not sure why you took this feature out. It's very useful when you want to access behind a closed firewall where you can access the network via VPN. Sure, I know you can use VNC or RDP, but  Splashtop is better especially with the high frame video rates and audio.

    This is most annoying - due to policy reasons my streamer can never access internet - not even once. There is no option on the Splashtop Personal client to support non-internet mode.

    In addition, due to policy, unable to upgrade the streamer. Is there a way to download the PC versoin of 1.x version of Splashtop ? If not we may have to decide against using Splashtop on the one PC as well as not use it in future as well on any other PC.
