Why do I get a "satellite" icon on the computer name? My tablet and computer are on the same local network.

note.gif  Please note that "Splashtop 2" is now known as "Splashtop Personal."

Basically, when you connect your tablet/phone to your computer within the same local network, you should see the computer listed on the tablet/phone without a "satellite" icon.  Conversely, if your tablet/phone and your computers are on different networks, then the normal behavior is that you should see the "satellite" icon on the computer name to indicate such.  Examples of both cases are shown in the illustration below.

streamer_states.png

If your tablet/phone and computer are on the same local network, but the satellite indicator is showing up on the computer name, then this could be due to the possibility that the ports being used (6783, 6784, and 6785 by default) are blocked by a firewall from the OS or third-party antivirus or security software.  Or possibly the specified ports are being occupied by other applications like Skype or others.

Here are some suggestions for you to try in various conditions.

1.  Sometimes, just a simple computer restart, or un-installing the Splashtop app from the tablet or phone and then re-installing again, can solve this issue.

2.  For Windows 7:

Please add another firewall policy for opening ports 6783, 6784, and 6785, which are used by Splashtop by default.

[Procedure]:  Open the Windows Start Menu, open the All Programs list, type "firewall," access the Advanced Firewall Settings.  Go to Inbound Rules, click New Rule... in the right panel, select the Port button, then click Next>

Enable_Port_on_Win7_1.png

Select TCP, then type 6783-6785, as shown below.

Enable_Port_on_Win7_2.png

It's better to re-start your computer after performing the above settings.

3.  For XP and Vista:

Go to Control Panel -> Windows Firewall, and make sure  Don't allow exceptions or Block incoming connection is unchecked.

xp_firewall.png

Please also add the files described in section #5 below into the Exceptions tab of the above window.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.  For Mac:

4.1  Turn OFF Firewall.

4.2  However, if you need to keep the firewall ON,  the following steps must be followed.

4.2.1  [Procedures]:  System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Turn On Firewall, click Firewall Options...

mac_firwall3.png

4.2.2  Disable (uncheck) the Block all incoming connections checkbox, as shown below.

4.2.3  Enable (check) Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections, as shown below.

4.2.4  Click the "+" button (indicated in the illustration below), if you can't find "Splashtop Streamer" in the list.

mac_firewall2.png

Shown below is a sample screen after clicking on the "+" button:

mac_firewall1.png

4.2.5  If the message box below appears, about "SRStreamerDaemon" or "SRProxy," click the Allow button.  This message might pop up after the first launch, after the Mac Streamer has been installed.  (Only for Mac Streamer v2.3.0.4 or later versions.)

Srstreamerdaemon.png

4.2.6  Remember to re-start your computer if any firewall settings have been modified.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5.  Here is another good tip that could help you solve this issue.  If you are an old user of Splashtop v1.x and if you had ever manually added files of Splashtop Streamer into your firewall exception list, please remove them and re-add them again for Streamer v2.x.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6.  If you still can't get rid of the "satellite" icon after trying the above suggestions for Windows 7 or for Mac, please check your computer and try to find the anti-virus or security software currently being used on your computer, if any.   This link provides a list of firewall products we've collected, plus instructions that can help you properly adjust the firewall settings for Splashtop according to your particular firewall product.

If you have looked at the list and instructions we have comprised and found that the list does not include the antivirus/security/firewall software you've installed, then please try to manually add the following Splashtop Streamer files into the "exception list" of the firewall product you are currently using.

Program Folder to find these files:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Splashtop\Splashtop Remote\Server

─ OR ─

C:\Program Files\Splashtop\Splashtop Remote\Server

 Application Files:

- Dataproxy.exe

- inputserv.exe  (only necessary for Splashtop Remote Touchpad)

- spupnp.exe

- SRFeature.exe

- SRLogin.exe  (no longer exists in ver. 2.x and later)

- SRServer.exe

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7.  If the ports are being occupied by another application, but you don't know which application (you may get a "Splashtop server is not reachable..." error message in this case), change the ports used by Splashtop as a work-around.  Please try to change the starting port number from 6783 to another one, such as 8783, to see if there is any difference.  You can manually change port numbers in the Port field of the Others tab in the Streamer dialog box.

port_no.png

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8.  Sometimes the settings on the router will also cause a local Streamer to be recognized as a remote one.  Please check the following options to see if any of these cases applies to you.

a)  If the "UPnP" option is in your router settings:  Please try to disable/or enable this option on your router to see if there's any difference.

b)  If the "AP Isolation" (or "Client Isolation") option is enabled:  This option usually appears in some router firmware like DD-WRT, Buffalo, DrayTek, TP-Link, D-Link, or Linksys;  and if it happens to be enabled, all connections to this router will be treated as independent.  Therefore, disabling this option should solve the issue.

c)  DrayTek (i.e. Vigor 2930) and Buffalo (i.e. WZR-HP-G300NH2) define two options for similar purposes as AP Isolation:

1. Isolate LAN (DrayTek) or Separate feature (Buffalo):  Separate two communication groups by WAN and LAN (Ethernet).  Disabling "Isolate LAN" or enabling the "Separate feature" can enable the communication between WAN and LAN.

2.  Isolate member (DrayTek):  Different users connecting to different SSID won't be able to communicate with each other if this option is enabled.  Some routers, like the DrayTek router, may have the feature to share multiple SSID from the same router.

*Sample illustration using the Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 router:

*Sample illustration using the DrayTek Vigor 2930 router:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9.  If your streamer is running on a virtual machine like Parallels or VMware Fusion, please make sure the settings of Network Adapter(for the virtual machine) is "Bridged Networking" instead of the default "Internet Sharing."  Thus, your Streamer can connect to the same network sub-net as your tablet/phone connection, and will have no satellite icon appear.

  • UI sample for VMWare Fusion:

Screen_Shot__for_bridge_network.png

  • Configuration steps for Parallels:

To configure a virtual machine to work in the Bridged Ethernet mode:
1.  In the Parallels Workstation, choose Virtual Machine > Configure.

2.  Select Network in the Hardware list.

3.  In the Network pane, make sure that the Connected option is selected.

4.  Select the appropriate network adapter from the list.  To connect the virtual machine's adapter
to the active network adapter of the host computer, choose Default Adapter.

NOTE:  In the MAC address field, you can change the MAC address currently assigned to the virtual
machine.  MAC addresses are automatically generated when you first set up the guest OS on the host
computer.  However, you can modify the default MAC address by typing another value in the MAC
address field or clicking the Generate button.  When entering a new MAC address, make sure that it is
unique within your network.

5.  Click OK.

Still getting the satellite icon. I have an ipad 3 and macbook pro. I turned off the firewall on my computer and restarted each device a few times. But still no dice. I've tried all the other tips, but still nothing.

Please help, i've been trying to get this to work for the past couple hours.

    @Jayhoyne,

If your macbook pro may enter Display sleep, please also install our Virtual Driver from Preferences/Settings tab(and restart).

You'll see the satellite icon if your Macbook pro did not install Virtual Driver and entered Display sleep.

I've followed all of the recommended fixes in an attempt to get rid of the satellite icon.  Nothing works.  Oh well.

    @Justin,

Please try to go to Splashtop Personal-> Settings-> Advanced tab to manually add your target computer with its IP to see if it could work.

I am having a trouble showing the satellite icon. Even though I turn off Firewall, I couldn't fix the issue. (I haven't installed anti virus software.)

    Please fix the issue ASAP!

    Hello,

I got it to work on Ubuntu 12.04 by disabling the uPnP setting in the router menu. Thanks, @Jaff.Kuo!

Can I please have my money back, this is a problem which should not exist in a pay app... Your simple 'fix' on windows 7 doesn't work, you should be ashamed charging for this until it works

Okay i've been having this problem, and it was because of the new version of ESET smart security.

    Fixed with the instructions.

Guys seriously just read a little and don't be lazy they even added a link on how to do it in every antivirus.

I didn't even know how to search for this since english isn't my first language, but found it and fixed it in 10 mins, and it works without a flaw.

    Thanks.

I have done absolutely everything above, shut down firewall entirely, reinstalled splashtop streamer on both phone and laptop, desktop and a linux virtual machine on both laptop and desktop, tried using another network entirely (I do have an old router I can use for that purpose), enabled and disabled uPnP, tried different ports, added firewall exceptions, added port forwards on both routers I have attempted with, tried manually specifying an IP address in the app and still get a satellite icon.

Hello Splashtop! I love this product and have been using it for a couple years now. It still works at home however on my new CISCO DPC3825 router at work I cant seem to get it on the same network (little satellite). Any ideas? Thank you!

Just thought I'd throw my two cents in. I have been using Splashtop 2 for quite some time and love it. It has always worked perfectly, up until yesterday. For no apparent reason the 'satellite' icon appeared! I tried everything to no avail. Just now I noticed that, for whatever reason, my iPad was connected to a neighbors unsecured!!! wifi network. I reconnected to my home network, and voila, all's good again :) Maybe worth checking the obvious before griping about an excellent product.

I had Splashtop installed on my D2 Pad tablet and Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.

All was working fine. My new modem as provided by my internet provider gave me a few dead spots in the house. I then attached my old router to the modem to increase the range.

Despite not changing any settings or the network name I now get the satellite icon.

I've done several uninstall/re-install of the program, and followed the above steps. I can not resolve the issue.

This is driving me crazy. I'm using Windows Vista.

    Any help is appreciated.

I was able to solve my Splashtop issues whilst connecting inside my home network (after trying the adding of the TCP ports 6873-6875, adding those port forwards on my router and giving each executable in the Splashtop program files full permissions in Windows firewall) by installing Tinywall (an alternate firewall) and giving Splashtop permissions through that. I wrote about it in detail here: http://www.pezant.ca/?p=245

I'm running Windows 8.1 on both my Surface RT and my Dell PC. When I installed Splashtop Streamer on my PC, there was no Setup Wizard after the installation, but it seems to work. My issue is that I'm getting a satellite icon on my PC when I try to connect to it from my tablet, but they are both connected on the same wireless network, I'm running on Windows Defender on my tablet, and Kaspersky Internet Security on my PC. What can I do to get this to work?

This has gotten so much worse since v1, I constantly get this on v2 even on the same network. There is no real reason for why it can't work between two private routable subnets, the software just prompts for the anywhere access to make a buck or two off me each month. If I know the IP, why can't we still input a computer manually?

It's a shame when good software turns into gimp-ware to try leverage past accolades and loyal users to promote paid (specifically monthly) access.

Besides, I don't WANT my computers going through or even referencing any 3rd party service to access my own servers. I guess it's back to logmein and vnc for me. :-(

I have tried everything and cannot get my computer to connect. I did the firewall setting, changes to my anti-virus program & messed with my router. I'm not paying a monthly or yearly fee, I would like a refund!

    Hi.

Just downloaded the streamer program for my mac and bought the app for my iPad. I have tried all the workarounds but still no luck of getting them connected even thought they are on the same network (have a satellite icon). My friend can use his AirDisplay on the same network (also mac to iPad), so I would really like some help solving this issue since it a lot of money for an app that does´t work.

I found out that when i close Splashtop Streamer, the Satellite Icon disappears from Splashtop Personal (on my laptops - Windows 7 and 8).  Tried many times on both machines (after reinstalling the apps: Splashtop Personal and Splashtop Streamer, rebooting the machines, disabling Firewalls, adding ports, etc. -  none of  them solved the problem), and only closing the Streamer did the trick...  I still have this problem on my tablet, though.

I don't need Splashtop Streamer on the laptops, since i only use these machines to connect to a server with no monitor, so the application was removed from both units.

I complained the 17/7 and still nothing. I have both the "streamer" and "personal" for my iPad. None of them works. Worst money I have ever spent on apps especially since the people selling them don't care that their product doesn't work. DONT BUY!!!!!!!!

I have done everything suggested multiple times to remove the satellite icon (which suddenly appeared on a network already set within the parameters lined out on your "support" page) with absolutely no result...  I can't help but notice that I am pressured to "Get Anywhere Access Pack for FREE by inviting your friends!" when trying to resolve this issue, and wonder if the only true way to fix this issue is to purchase something I neither need nor want.
