Why do I see a black/green screen on my tablet/phone?

According to the reports we've received from users, the "black screen" issue could be caused by the following reasons.  If any of these situations pertains to you, please try the related suggestions to solve them.

I.  Splashtop Streamer

1.  Mac OS X 10.7.0 (Lion) or above will cause your tablet or phone to get a blank screen when you are playing video using an Apple DVD Player.

Solution:  Since this issue would need to be fixed by Apple and we currently can't do anything about it, we suggest that you please use another Player like VLC instead.

2.  nVidia GeForce Graphic card with Splashtop Streamer for Windows (Win 7, 8/8.1, and 10).

Solution:  Please disable the GeForce optimization to see if there's any difference.

a.  Execute regedit.exe on the computer with the streamer installed.
b.  Double-click on it to execute it.  (This step may trigger a confirm dialog box by the system; click Yes to execute if it pops up.)
c.  Search registry key "EnableNvFBC". Then change the value of the key to "0".
d.  Exit Splashtop Streamer by right-clicking on the icon in the System tray.  Then launch the Streamer again from the Start menu.  (Re-booting the computer can produce the same effect.)
e.  Try to connect again and see if the "black screen" issue is gone.

3.  Intel Sandy Bridge graphic card with Splashtop Streamer for Windows.

Solution:  If you are using this display chip and get a black (or half green) screen, please find or add a new registry key from:  \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Splashtop Inc.\Splashtop Remote Server\EnableIQSV  and set it to 0, then restart the Splashtop Streamer.  This will fix the black screen issue on client devices.

(Download the attached EnableIQSV.reg_  file and rename it to be .reg file by deleting the underscore at the end of the name.  Then double-clicking it can automatically add this key.)

4.  Playing movies with various types of media players like Windows Media Player, VLC... app on Windows isn't using the proper settings while playing a movie.

Solution:  Please see this link for more info.

5.  Connects to a Win7 that is installed on a Mac Mini (via bootcamp) without any monitor attached (headless).

Solution:  Our engineering is working on fixing this issue.  A temporary workaround is to hook up a monitor to the Mac Mini.

6.   If there is some software named "Rapport," or other Rapport-like software installed on your computer for the same purpose (to protect the website contents from being captured),  you may see a black area within the Internet browser (not a full black screen).  This means the contents you are browsing are protected, and not able to be captured, nor capable of being "streamed."  In this case, you do have some options available you can try:

a.  Enable nVidia GeForce optimization if your display card is nVidia and supports this optimization.
b.  Browse another URL that's not listed in the Trusteer web page.

c.  Remove Rapport (or the Rapport-like software) from your computer.

II.  Splashtop Client

1.  Sometimes just closing the app and then re-opening the app can easily solve this black screen issue.
2.  Android v4.x + Splashtop for Android HD client v2.x may get a black screen on the tablet.

Solution:  Enable option "Run in Compatible mode."  You can find this option at  Settings --> General Preferences --> Run in Compatible mode.

3.  ViewSonic tablet with Android v3.x

Please note that the only version of ROM that we tested with ViewSonic was 2.x  which is officially supported by Splashtop Remote and should not produce the black screen issue.  If you use ViewSonic with an Android3.x customized ROM, any black screen issue may need to be fixed by ViewSonic.

III.  Others

  • Using Splashtop Streamer for Windows with RDP session:  If you first connected your computer via RDP, and then connected via Splashtop Remote Desktop, both the Streamer and RDP can successfully co-exist. However, if you minimize the RDP session, Splashtop Remote Desktop will get a black screen.

Solution:  Restore the RDP session again.

    I have a 27 inch monitor with 2560x1440 resolution and an Asus Transformer Prime that would get the black/blank screen every time I tried using Splashtop 2. Using the DisableDDA.ref file into the registry I was able to fix the issue and now splashtop works perfectly.

    Thanks so much for the help!

    I am having this problem, and the recommended solution is not much of a solution because in order to use Splashtop at all I have to first connect to the server using an RDP client, and then also connect using the Splashtop client. Is there no better solution available? I am using an iPad2 as the client device. Quoting from above: "Using Splashtop Streamer for Windows with RDP session: If you first connected your computer via RDP, and then connected via Splashtop Remote Desktop, both the Streamer and RDP can successfully co-exist. However, if you minimize the RDP session, Splashtop Remote Desktop will get a black screen. Solution: Restore the RDP session again."

    Ok, I have been having this issue only on my Windows XP machine.  From what I can tell is that the Splashtop Streamer does not continue to run when I close my Remote session for the XP machine.  It is only when I log in that Splashtop Streamer starts up.  I can actually watch it start up and show up in the running menu.  This does not happen on my Vista and 7 machines.

    @Str1ve13,

    Is this your steps?

    1. connect to xp with RDP

    2. connect to xp with Splashtop

    3. close RDP, and Splashtop session disconnect at the same time.

    In this case, Splashtop seesion is based on RDP session, when RDP minimized, Splashtop client will get a black screen, when RDP closed, Splashtop session will be closed too. This is a normal behaviors under expectation.

    For XP machine only, Splashtop (on my tablet) can see my computer.  I connect to it, but it shows only a black screen (well with some small 1or2 pixel boxes spread evenly across the top).  I then disconnect Splashtop from the XP machine.  I RDP into the XP machine from my laptop to see what might be the issue.  I notice that the Splashtop streamer starts up when I RDP from my laptop, rather than it staying on.  While I am RDP'd into my computer from my laptop, I can splashtop (on my tablet) into the computer and see everything fine.

    My Vista machine doesn't have this problem, when I use splashtop (on my tablet) it brings me to the windows login screen, I can type in my password and everything shows up perfect.  Same with my windows 7 machine.  It's only the XP machine that is having the problem.

    Thanks for the quick response.

    Update: I figured out that it's not truly a black screen yet it's showing 4 mini screens (so like 1"x1") on my tablet of my xp machine with ghosting of the mouse. I have tried messing with the screen resolution but nothing seems to work.

    @Str1ve13,

    Have you installed any anti-virus or security software on your xp?

    Is xp on the same network as your vista?

    Can you attach a screenshot for that 'black screen' on tablet?

    @Str1ve13,

    Have you tried 'run in compatible mode' on android side?

    Please also try to find kind of acceleration option in display settings, and disable it to see if there's any difference.

    @Zebblack58, Dennys.Infor,

    Please try to enable "Run in compatible mode" option to see if there's any difference.

    You can enable this option with the following steps:

    1. Open Splashtop 2 app on your tablet/phone, you'll see the streamer list
    2. Enter Settings page.
    3. Find "General preferences" and tap it
    4. Find "Run in compatible mode", and tick it to enable this option
    5. try again

    Thank to team. After release 2.4.0.1 of Streamer it's not necessary to activate Run in compatible mode at settings of terminal. It works perfectly. If it could work faster it would be better.

    Thanks to all members of team.

    The .reg is a Windows registration file by default ,basically you can save it in your local drive(ex. desktop), then double click on it, Windows will confirm you to execute it or not, click Yes to import the key.

    Or right mouse click on this file, select 'Merge' in the context menu can have the same purpose.

    but when i when double clicked it, there was no confirmation from Windows. instead,  it opened using Notepad and stated

    'Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Splashtop Inc.\Splashtop Remote Server]
    "EnableDXGI"=dword:00000000
    '

     According to your attachments, the other 2 have an underscore at the end of the file. is that normal?

    thank you for your reply!

    @Akiffrazali,

    Looks like the association of .reg file on your system has been changed by you accidentally.

    Here are another two ways can be used :

    1. save DisableDDA.reg on your desktop

    2. click Windows Start button, type "regedit C:\Users\<your user name>\Desktop\DisableDDA.reg" on the command line

    OR change back the association of .reg file back to Windows default.

    1. right mouse on DisableDDA.reg, select Properties from the Context menu

    2.Click Modify to open a dialog, click Browse button to open File Explore window

    3.Find regedit32.exe under C:\Windows\System32 (depending on where your Windows installed)

    4. double DisableDDA.reg again.

    I am having a problem similar to the one described by @Str1ve13.

    When I connect to the XP desktop I see 4 miniature versions of the desktop all in a row near the top of the tables screen.  It worked correctly once immediately after installation, but after that all I get is the above behavior.  I do use RDP to interact with the XP machine.  It functions as a home server of sorts, and has no display or input devices connected to it.

    Any ideas?

    So I've decided to install this on my ASUS TF-300T and normally I'd ask my husband these questions, but he's not around atm.  Sooo being the newbie, so I know what to look for, do I assume if my computer monitor is

    1)  Sleeping, my Splashtop will still be able to manipulate it's way on my computer?  T/F

    OR

    2) Shut off, but computer on, my Splashtop will still be able to manipulate it's way on my computer?  T/F

    Thanks in advance, oh smart ones!

    This is an old thread, but wanted to share what fixed the green tint issue for me for those who may still be having issues with this. I have my PC plugged into my TV through HDMI, and on Windows 8.1 it automatically scaled the interface up to 150%. Once I reduced the scale back to 100%, my green tint issue went away. I hope this helps.

    When I go to settings, general preferences I do not see a run in compatibility mode option.  I have an asus transformer all in one, the tablet was connecting automatically to the desktop up until this morning.

    if anyone is having trouble getting back on there windows 7 pc all you need to do is access it in safe mode and restore windows. This will not remove any data but revert all the settings to default (some setting where the screen displays black empty evilness) now you should be able to access it normally.

    Blank screen on I-Phone 6, I'm running an Nvidia 970 with latest drivers but simply can not view my PC. Just spent the $16.99........ so if you'll refund it I can live without Splashtop....... worked great before upgrading Video card and I-Phone.  Nice program, Jim Purchased 3/21/16
